Remote controls are a great accessory for your fan. They give you the option of using your fan from anywhere in the room. This is particularly advantageous when in bed or in the middle of that movie. Many remotes offer additional functionality, such as an off timer. There are even WIFI equipped options that allow you to seamlessly incorporate your fan into your smart home system.

to remote or not to remote, that is the question.

ac or dc?

Alternating Current (AC) or Direct Current (DC) refers to the type of electrical current used. But what dose that mean to you? Here are some facts to help you decide.

  • DC fans are typically up to 70% more energy efficient than their AC counter parts.

  • DC motors are smaller, meaning the fan design can be smaller and the motor operating noise is significantly quieter.

  • DC fans can only be operated with a remote control.

  • AC fans can be operated via a wall control, remote control or pull cord.

  • DC fans have more speed options, generally 5 - 6.

  • AC fans generally only have 3 speeds.

So what’s it all mean?

  • When the the fan is in summer/forward, the fan is spinning in the anti-clockwise direction. This causes the air to move towards the ground cooling the room.

  • When the fan is in winter/reverse, the fan is spinning in the clockwise direction. This will cause the natural rising warm air from the ceiling back down to circulate around the room. This works particularly well when in conjunction with your home’s heating.

Summer/forward vs Winter/reverse

It can be hard to know which size fan is the right size for your room. Aesthetically speaking, the wrong size fan will look out of place; too big and it will pull focus, too small and it will just look funny. From a functionality point of view, if the fan is too small it will not move enough air, so if you’re unsure it’s always better to go bigger as the bigger the fan the more air it will move and after all that’s what it’s there for.
